2020 Photography Compendium

CENTER’s strategic support for lens-based art has deepened the public’s appreciation for photography and enabled talented artists to create socially, environmentally and politically engaged art. The New Mexico-based nonprofit has conferred grants and awards to promising artists, cultivated relationships among and between communities, broadened public access to noteworthy artistic projects and curated educational resources for scholars, students and artists.

Work done while at ThoughtMatter

One of CENTER’s latest initiatives is its Photography 2020 Compendium. CENTER conceived of this project as a separate digital platform that would showcase remarkable photography, film and other lens-based art of the last two decades. CENTER tapped ThoughtMatter to design, organize and build this new site.

Our design nods to the rule of thirds, an evergreen guideline for photo composition. The gridded structure supports the scholarly content in a readily digestible, while emphasizing the investigative nature of the content.

CENTER’s Photography 2020 Compendium can function as a digital museum, but the site also hosts scholarly and artistic presentations, academic essays, archived artistic projects and written and recorded interviews with artists, curators, journalists and others. Devising an intuitive, easily navigable way of organizing these myriad resources was an early priority as ThoughtMatter began planning the site.
